Description: The "Miss Osaka Prefecture" doll represents a Japanese girl around seven years of age. She is dressed in a silk kimono with a pattern of flowers, butterflies, leaves and buildings, closed with a wide silk "obi," and wears white Japanese toe socks known as "tabi" on her feet. This doll, which stands 80 cm (31.5 inches) tall, was handmade by Goyo Hirata in Japan in 1927. The Committee on World Friendship Among Children of the Federal Council of the Church of Christ in America donated the "Miss Osaka Prefecture" doll and her accessories to the Ohio History Connection in 1929. This doll, along with 57 others known as "Japanese Friendship Dolls," were part of a goodwill exchange program between the United States and Japan during the late 1920s. This effort, spearheaded by Dr. Sidney Gulick, a former American missionary to Japan, and Japanese Viscount Eiichi Shibusawa, was intended to ease cultural tension between the two nations. Description: In this cartoon, President Benjamin Harrison (in office 1888-1892) is shown defending American honor against those who would usurp it. It refers to the Valparaiso Incident, in which two American sailors were killed in a fight while ashore in Valparaiso, Chile. Harrison had his foreign minister, James G. Blaine, send a letter threatening to terminate diplomatic relations. The Chilean government apologized and send reparations for the incident. The cartoon also shows that the rift caused by the Civil War was still a factor in national political life.
